Old Type LEGO Pneumatics |
|
|

|
These are the old type
pneumatics from the Technic 8680 Artic Rescue Base set.
The old type spring-loaded hand pump is a two-way device - it can both
suck in or blow out air.
The old type cylinder is single-acting with only one port.
The pneumatic switch is the same for both the old type and current
pneumatics. |
|
|
The old type pneumatics require
a special one-way valve brick which acts like a "Pneumatic
diode".
Its purpose is to separate blown air from sucked air.
The middle port which is connected to the hand pump allows air to be blown
out or sucked in.
The right port is for blowing air out. The left port is for sucking
air in.

 |
|
|
| Here's how they're connected up: |
|
 |
 |
|
Air is sucked in to retract the piston. |
Air is blown out to extend the piston. |

Pneumatics & Air Tanks |
Will the blue air
tanks work with the old pneumatics? Here's an experiment you can do if you have the
old pneumatics and a couple of the blue air tanks.
Set up the circuit
shown in the pic below. The upper air tank will be in the suction
line. The lower air tank will be in the compression line.
Put the
pneumatic switch in the center neutral position. Work the old hand
pump up and down several times. Flick the pneumatic switch to one
side. What happens? Now flick it to the other side. What happens? |
